YOUR FALL MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST!

This weather has most people wondering if it’s still spring or summer. I know I’m confused and most mornings I have no idea how to dress for the day! What I do know, is that fall is a great time to prepare your home and garden for the upcoming winter months (I promise winter will show up). Here are some fall maintenance tips to help you get ready for the change in season:

Home Maintenance:

  1. Inspect Your Roof: Check for damaged or missing shingles and have them replaced. Ensure that your roof is in good condition to withstand winter weather.

  2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves and debris to prevent clogs that could lead to water damage. Consider installing gutter guards to make maintenance easier.

  3. Seal Gaps and Cracks: Inspect windows, doors, and the foundation for drafts or gaps. Seal them with caulk or weatherstripping to improve energy efficiency and keep out cold air.

  4. Check Heating System: Have your furnace or heating system serviced by a professional to ensure it's working efficiently and safely.

  5. Clean or Replace Filters: Replace HVAC filters to improve indoor air quality and heating system efficiency.

  6. Insulate Pipes: Insulate exposed water pipes to prevent freezing and potential pipe bursts.

  7. Fireplace and Chimney: If you have a fireplace, have it cleaned and inspected before use. Ensure the chimney is clear of debris and creosote buildup.

  8. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace batteries and test these life-saving devices to ensure they are working correctly.

  9. Prepare for Winter Storms: Stock up on essentials such as flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and water in case of power outages.

Yard and Garden Maintenance:

  1. Rake Leaves: Keep your yard clear of fallen leaves to prevent mold growth and to make the yard safer.

  2. Trim Trees and Bushes: Prune overhanging branches that could potentially damage your home during winter storms.

  3. Lawn Care: Aerate and fertilize your lawn in the fall to help it withstand winter and come back strong in the spring.

  4. Garden Cleanup: Remove dead plants and debris from your garden. Consider planting fall bulbs for spring blooms.

  5. Outdoor Furniture: Clean and store or cover outdoor furniture to protect it from winter weather.

By following these fall maintenance tips, you can help protect your home and yard from the challenges that winter weather can bring. Regular maintenance can also save you money by preventing costly repairs down the road.

Happy Dwellings!
